Understand the product being proposed

Heat-reflective roof coatings are designed to reflect more solar energy, with performance that depends on the particular product and colour.

Dulux lists total solar reflectance as a feature of its Acratex Cool Roof residential range.

If a provider suggests a heat-reflective finish, ask for the exact product name and its current technical information.

That gives you something specific to review alongside the appearance and cost of the proposed finish.

Compare the colour as well as the coating

Ask how the selected colour performs within the nominated product range and what the manufacturer's published measurement describes.

A comparison is most useful when the products, colours and test basis are stated clearly.

Bring a physical sample into the decision and compare it with the gutters, brickwork and other exterior finishes.

Confirm the chosen colour and product on the quote so the appearance and specification stay connected.

  • Exact product and colour name
  • Published reflectance information for that option
  • The surface and preparation the product is specified for
  • The additional price, if it's an optional upgrade
  • Any application and maintenance conditions

Discuss the result for your particular home

Ask the provider to distinguish a coating's measured surface performance from a forecast about comfort or energy use inside your home.

A useful forecast needs to explain the building, existing roof, insulation and comparison it is based on.

Keep any temperature or energy-saving claim tied to evidence that applies to your situation.

For a broader comfort project, consider getting building-specific advice that looks at the home as a whole.

Confirm suitability for the existing roof

The coating discussion belongs after the roof material and existing surface have been assessed.

Ask what preparation is proposed and whether any existing finish affects the manufacturer's requirements.

For terracotta, use the separate material guide before treating a coating as part of the restoration plan.

The provider should explain the complete specification for the roof in front of them, including any components needing attention beforehand.

Get the upgrade and its terms in writing

Have the quote show whether the coating is part of the base scope or an optional addition.

Ask which colours are available, what the price includes and how any promotion's eligibility applies to your roof.

Read product warranty information separately from the provider's workmanship terms, including who handles each kind of enquiry.

This guide explains the questions to ask, and any available product, promotion or warranty must be confirmed by the provider in your quote.

Include the option in your restoration enquiry

If heat-reflective coatings interest you, mention that alongside the complete restoration you're considering.

Add your roof material if known, your suburb and the timing you have in mind.

I'll review your enquiry in my role as MEL Roof Restoration's enquiry coordinator and discuss any proposed introduction before sharing your details.

The provider would assess your roof, confirm suitable options and prepare the written quote.
